WWA had no idea what would happen once it entered playback mode. They were hoping it wouldn't do that until it was returned to them. They would place it with another test subject, a tester different from Zoey - a man perhaps? - and see what would happen. Unfortunately, it entered playback mode of its own accord and ended up first with the package and then with Leonora.
In playback mode, it continues to absorb. It isn't just playing back, it is adding on, absorbing, re-forming. It is not just Zoey, but Zoey + package + Leonora, with unpredictable results.
Also, you cannot turn it off. It is self-powering. Has no battery, no external power source.
From the round robin of four (Zoey, package, Leonora, Kandhi), we narrow down to three (Zoey, Leonora, Kandhi) and then two as Z and K join forces (ZK, Leonora), until they finally catch up with her. They can only track her down by her socialnet messages. TBD.
In the end, Kandhi may recapture the device, only to be unwilling to risk carrying it either on her person or even in her carryon bag. She puts it in her checked-in luggage, but while it's on the way to the plane, the baggage handler suddenly decides, hey, this bag doesn't want to go to San Francisco, it wants to go to Miami, and it ends with him changing the label and throwing it onto another cart ...
Next up is Kandhi, on her way, she sees a strange message on Zoey's socialnet just as the stewardess makes her turn off her device for takeoff.
