it posts to her socialnet as her - about how it feels like it has lost a lot of weight - her friend Khandi is alarmed and calls her up (her socialnet is usually so clean and business only, it was unlike her to post anything like that at all, and besides, she has never been preoccupied with her weight in any case (NO PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION EVER of Zoey beyond that remark) - this is how Zoey becomes aware of the thing, not that she knows what it could be. she assumes that someone really is after her - identity theft! (of a different sort is going on here). she deletes the post. it reposts. this is how they end up sort of communicating, though each one thinks it is talking to itself

they met when Khandi overheard Zoey at a coffee shop talking about device testing - K was her intro to WWA

the race is on between the two, from Wetford to San Francisco and stops along the way ...
